Frequently Asked Questions
I visit my dentist regularly. Why do I need a comprehensive
exam?
It is not possible for the dentist to treat you thoroughly
without the information gathered at the new patient exam. During
this comprehensive exam, you have the opportunity to speak with
the doctor so he can evaluate your dental health, explain any
problems that may exist, understand your expectations, and
answer your questions. A hygienist will assist the doctor in
examining your teeth and gums and take necessary x-rays. From
this exam, the doctor can then develop a dental plan that best
fits your needs.
At what age should I take my child to the dentist?
Children should be examined by a dentist when all of their
baby teeth have erupted, usually by age three. It is best for
the child to visit the dentist before any treatment is
necessary. The first visit should be an easy, fun time for the
child to meet the dentist and his staff.
What can I do to make my teeth whiter?
Bleaching is one option for brightening the teeth without any
type of restorations. However, if you want to change the shape
of your teeth, in addition to the color, veneers or porcelain
crowns will be your best option.
Will it hurt my teeth to whiten them?
Bleaching does not damage the teeth. Teeth may be sensitive
after bleaching due to the cleaning of the pores in the teeth to
remove stains. This sensitivity usually lasts only a day after
the pores have been cleaned.
When should my child begin braces?
The need for braces varies with the type of treatment
required. For some conditions, children need to begin treatment
as early as 7 or 8 years to take advantage of their growth.
Other children may wait until ages 11 to 13 when all of their
permanent teeth have erupted.
If my tooth does not hurt, how can I have a cavity?
A cavity can develop in a tooth over a period of several
years or in a few months. Most people are not aware of a cavity
until the nerve becomes damaged. When this occurs, a root canal
may be necessary to save the tooth. It is easier and less
stressful to have a cavity treated before it begins to hurt!
My front tooth has turned dark. What can I do?
A tooth turns dark when the nerve dies. Damage to the nerve
may result from hitting the tooth, such as from a fall. When
this happens, the tooth may need a root canal. The dark tooth
may be lightened by bleaching from inside the tooth or the tooth
may need to be covered with a veneer or crown to mask the color.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
Dental implants are a great option for those patients missing
teeth. Dental implants are titanium screws surgically placed
below the gums. Once the bone has bonded to the implant, a crown
is placed on the implant. This is done without having to work on
the adjacent teeth.
Are you accepting new patients?
